We are named after Alice H. Parker to honor her. She was a remarkable Black American inventor born in 1895 in Morristown, New Jersey, Parker designed the first gas furnace powered by natural gas and the first heating system with individually controlled air ducts that distributed heat evenly throughout buildings. Her innovative approach allowed for “zone heating,” where temperature could be moderated in different parts of a building.

In 2024, the FBI has been working to remove harmful software (malware) that has been secretly installed in U.S. homes through the Internet. This malware was created by foreign governments or organizations supported by them. These groups are known for creating “back doors” in their products—hidden access points that make it easy for them to hack into their own devices (2).
One of our main competitors in the smart thermostat market uses these products and software. This puts U.S. homes at risk of a “supply chain attack,” where hackers could install harmful software during a regular product update (3). A similar type of attack was recently reported by the U.S. government agency CISA. Experts, including former Pentagon analyst Michael Maloof, have confirmed that the government behind these products has significant control and can install back doors into them (4).
